Week 1
The morning started out with brief introductions, explaining the existence and history of the YLR. Shortly there after, we quickly changed gears into work mode. Dave, the other intern, who I am calling "Kim" (I saw that name written down on an intern application form in the office that day), and me all picked out some gloves and a work tool called a dibble (aka dibbler or dibber). I soon found out that dibbles make life incredibly easy when planting. We picked up dibble tube racks from our greenhouse containing dibble tubes filled with native grass species. We took them over to a research plot to be planted. The species of grasses we were planting(Common name/Scientific name) were Brome Grass/Bromus marginatus, Wild Oats/Avena barbata and Meadow Barley/Hordeum brachyantherum. Planting the grasses was very straight forward and efficient. The end of the dibble tool is the same shape as the dibble tube (makes sense right). We started by making a sort of furrow in the mulch. We then used the dibble tool to make a hole in the soil, removed the grass species from the tube, and inserted it into the hole, making sure of a good fit. Lastly we made sure to cover the base of the seedling with soil to ensure protection of the roots and drying out. I did that for about two and a half hours before I was taken away to help pick up plant species for the reserve. We were picking up plants from the UCSC Thimann Labs Greenhouse. Some of the plants we picked up were: Yarrow/achillea millifolium, California Sage Brush/Artemesia californica, and Coyote Brush/Baccharis pilularis.

After returning to the YLR, we dropped off our new seedlings to the greenhouse there and Tim gave me a tour of the surrounding area. Later I was sent off on my own to collect water depth measurements in 9 drilled wells around the property. This was a great way for me to familiarize myself with the the reserve and take it all in. Overall, I'd have to say an excellent first experience.
